What Loft & Lie Adjustments Actually Do (and Why They Matter)

Most golfers know their clubs have a “loft” and a “lie angle,” but few realize how much these two measurements affect every shot they hit.

Professional players check their loft and lie regularly — especially after travel, practice, or hitting off mats. Even small changes can throw off distance, accuracy, and consistency.

The good news: understanding these adjustments is simple, and getting your clubs checked can make your set play exactly the way it should.

What Is Loft?

Loft is the angle of the clubface that controls how high and far the ball launches.

How Loft Affects Your Shot

  • More loft = higher ball flight + shorter distance

  • Less loft = lower ball flight + more distance

Even a 1° change can:

  • shift your carry distance

  • change your gapping

  • affect trajectory in the wind

Common Loft Problems

  • Wedges losing spin because loft decreases over time

  • Irons going too far or not far enough

  • Gaps between clubs becoming uneven

Heat, hitting off mats, and regular play can all bend loft slightly over time — especially in forged irons.

What Is Lie Angle?

Lie angle is the angle between the club shaft and the ground when the club is at rest.

It influences whether the clubhead sits flat, toe-up, or toe-down at impact.

How Lie Angle Affects Your Shot

  • Too upright = shots go left (for right-handed golfers)

  • Too flat = shots go right

Players often think this is a swing flaw — but it’s often equipment.

Signs Your Lie Angle Is Wrong

  • Consistent pulls or pushes with good contact

  • Toes or heels digging into the turf

  • Irons that never feel “square” at impact

  • Wear marks on the sole not centered

How Often Should You Get Loft & Lie Checked?

We recommend checking once per year, or more often if you:

  • play a lot

  • practice on mats

  • travel with your clubs

  • use forged irons or wedges

  • notice directional issues

A quick adjustment can bring your entire set back into proper gapping and alignment.

Why Loft & Lie Matter for Consistency

Dialed-in loft and lie create:

  • predictable carry distances

  • consistent ball flight

  • proper divot patterns

  • better directional control

  • more confidence with each club

Most golfers struggle with their irons without even realizing their equipment has slowly changed over time.
